Elizabeth Hoy

Calling attention to changes and variations in perception, Elizabeth Hoy creates work through an intersection of painting, sculpture and installation. Employing formal decisions, Hoy addresses the ways human experience and consciousness are inscribed upon a specific space.   Hoy’s method is like playing a visual game of telephone with herself where the viewer is the last ear.  Hoy thinks about how we, outside of this specific process, gain and lose information with any form of communication. Outdoors and from life, she quickly paints the landscape around her, from these paintings Hoy creates sculptures and installations using found materials, experimenting to create a conversation with her surroundings. Drawing and painting are the first step in a means of exploration and engagement with a place. Often returning to the same site, she tries to capture the subtle shifts in the environment. There is play between the scale of the landscape, the human body, the architecture of the studio, and her paintings and installations.

Elizabeth Hoy was born in Nashua, NH, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She has received fellowships from Le Couvent artist residency, Wave Hill, the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists, the AIM program at the Bronx Museum, and the Royal College of Art in London. Her work has been exhibited internationally and in the northeast; including A.I.R. Gallery and The Painting Center both in NY, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, The Gallery at Somes Sound and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Hoy received a BA from Wesleyan University and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania.  She is the Director of the Beard and Weil Galleries at Wheaton College.
